Can Shopping Be Beneficial To Your Health?

Many of us are actively seeking new and proven ways to increase longevity. Taking vitamins, having a balanced diet and exercising are all great ways to maintain good health, but did you know that you should probably be adding in a little “retail therapy” into your mix?

Don’t think you have to max out a credit card to reap the benefits, merely window shopping will achieve the same results according to researchers in Taiwan. The study looked at 1,841 people aged 65 or over in Taiwan who live independently at home. One of the researchers, Mark Wahlqvist, MD, PhD, visiting professor at the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan, says "It is of particular interest in that it provides apparent benefit for the less socio-economically advantaged (the poorer) and for men."

Shopping has been found to be a therapeutic distraction from life’s problems. It is also great for boosting the immune system, releasing endorphins to lift spirits, keeping your brain sharp and of course getting your does of quality socializing time with a few close friends. It may also lead to eating better if most of your shopping is done on a Saturday at your comminuty fresh market!

It is no real surprise that those who shop most may be in the best physical and mental shape with a robust social life. Just try not to get too carried away with your shopping sprees – moderation is the key to this type of therapy!

New Bras Tailored Just for Augmented Breasts

Along with your two new perky assets comes the desire to feel sexy in what lies beneath your everyday clothes. After a well, planned surgery, and recovery period, the last step for many women becomes a hunt for the perfect bra that will not only showcase but also support a newly enhanced figure.

After a breast surgery, many women find it difficult to find a bra that is not only supportive but also sexy at the same time.  A supportive bra is “a must” for women with implants! Unfortunately, the more supportive the bra, the less attractive the bra usually tends to be – featuring larger straps and a less revealing neckline.

The search for the perfect bra can be a frustrating process for many patients post surgery. Take a look at the article below on RealSelf.com to find out what Orlando’s Breast Surgery Expert, Dr. Armando Soto has to say about which bras are best for women to wear after breast augmentation:

Say Goodbye to Under-Eye Bags

Your eyes are said to be the windows to your soul- so why wouldn’t you want them to look as young and vibrant as you feel?

Under-eye bags are one of the most common and frustrating signs of aging, and may occur at various ages in different individuals.  There are certain measures you can take, both non-invasive and surgical, to turn back the hands of time giving you fresh, younger looking eyes.

Why Do We Get Under-Eye Bags?
There is no doubt that the aging process takes a toll on the delicate tissues surrounding the eye area.  As we age, the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around our eyes become weak, causing the fat to shift out of place and leaving unsightly bulges beneath the eyes.  Though these effects are typically minor, unfortunately, these little guys can add years onto your age!

How Do We Get Rid of Under-Eye Bags?
There are many questionable topical treatments available for those concerned with just puffiness and dark circles.  If you are thinking about taking the next step to plump up the troughs around this delicate area, injectable filler treatments are an excellent minimally invasive option that can prove to be a very beneficial solution.

Here, at Aesthetic Enhancements, we offer 3 different types of dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane & Radiesse), that may be just what you need to address any hollowness and fine lines that have developed under or around your eyes.

Though filler treatments are not permanent, nor do they permanently remove sagging skin, they can camouflage this problem area and allow for a fresher, more youthful look without surgery or downtime.

When choosing your place of aesthetic care, it is important to choose a highly trained and experienced provider. Keep in mind that not just anyone holds the skill level to provide a flawless finish when it comes to your face. Choosing someone who understands the anatomy of the face and who will keep your safety at the top of his or her priority list is key when selecting your injector. Here at Aesthetic Enhancements, our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Boone, has over 13 years of experience and would love to meet with you for a complimentary consultation.

Say “Good Bye!” to your unwanted bags for good with a more permanent option, Blepharoplasty. This procedure, also known as eyelid surgery, is another option offered by Orlando Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Armando Soto here at Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery that can reshape and rejuvenate your eyes permanently.  With lower lid blepharoplasty, the skin and fat under the eye are repositioned while your muscles are tightened resulting in a firmer, more youthful appearance.

Florida Named the Butt Capital of the United States!

When it comes to flaunting a more curvaceous figure, Floridians know just the secret – The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure! A recent study conducted by RealSelf.com, a patient driven plastic surgery educational site, reported 3 out of the top 5 cities with the highest interest in the Brazilian Butt Lift are located in Florida! With a plethora of bikinis along its warm sandy beaches year round, it is no surprise to us that The Sunshine State has earned the title of “The Butt Capital of the US”.  Miami steals the scene in the #1 spot, followed by West Palm Beach at #4 and Orlando at #5.

The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure is an incredible plastic surgery procedure that helps patients achieve a fuller, rounder backside by utilizing unwanted fat from certain areas of the body and reshaping it into the bottom. If having a more, shapely silhouette is something that you’ve always longed for, this procedure may be just what you’ve been looking for.

The Brazlian Butt Lift is a trending surgical procedure that has gained popularity in recent years, however, there are only a handful of properly trained and experienced Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the world who can deliver such desirable outcomes.

When considering any plastic surgery procedure, the importance of choosing your plastic surgeon carefully cannot be stressed enough.  Many unscrupulous and untrained providers strive to lure in patients with similar procedures that may put the patient’s safety at risk. You can be sure to be in safe hands when you select only a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, such as Dr. Armando Soto, who is held to a strict code of ethics when it comes to patient safety and quality of aesthetic care.

Dr. Soto is a Brazilian Butt Lift expert (in fact, he is quoted in the RealSelf article above!) and would love to meet with you to talk about your goals. Visit the Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery photo gallery to see some of his patient’s results for yourself! Call today to set up your complimentary consult – 407.218.4550 or visit www.drarmandosoto.com to learn more!

The Fight Against Cellulite

With Summer right around the corner, many women are scrambling to look their best in their swimsuits this season.  For 90% of those women, a panic attack may be in order because of something you may or may not be familiar with….CELLULITE!

Unfortunately, no one is immune – not even beauties such as Uma Thurman, Kim Cattrall or Kim Kardashian. While men can have cellulite too, women are much more likely to become victims simply due to the distribution of fat, muscle and connective tissue in the skin.

Although the cause of cellulite cannot be pinpointed to any one factor, most attribute it to a combination of things, such as:  genetics, diet, hormones, skin elasticity and lifestyle.

Unfortunately, a permanent cure for cellulite is still to be found, however, there are a few different ways we can  camouflage it:

·       Use a self tanner to even out skin tone and blend in the tiny imperfections. Check out this post on our very own recommendations for the best self-tanners.  (insert link to last year’s blog)

·       Endermologie, a machine assisted deep tissue lipomassage, helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. Sessions should be done at least 1-2 times per week for a total of 10-14 treatments to see optimal results. We have many patients here at Aesthetic Enhancements that have been extremely pleased with their results. Call today to set up an appointment to speak to Amanda, our paramedical aesthetician about how endermologie can help you treat your areas of concern!

·       A confident attitude! Everything looks better when you hold your head high with a big smile on your face.

Nip/Tucks Tailored to Ethnicity

While most women long for a flatter tummy, toned legs and slimmer arms, some ethnic groups share features that make particular plastic surgery procedures more popular among them. Michael Jackson and Sammy Sosa not withstanding, when handled by a responsible, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon like Orlando’s Dr. Armando Soto, these changes can be very natural and attractive.

Plastic Surgery to “Fit In”.
It’s a big adjustment for people coming from all over the world to fit in the American lifestyle.  Language, culture, beliefs, and clothing are just a few of the differences that may contribute to a person’s feeling just outside the inclusion circle of their adopted home. Whether to create a more rounded eye with a sharp upper lid fold, a more western, Caucasian appearing nose, or other changes, these procedures are now very common.

The number of ethnic minorities, particularly Asian Americans, undergoing plastic surgery has dramatically increased over the past few years.  For example, Phillipino pop star, Charice Pempengo underwent Botox injections to make her naturally round face appear narrow for a more American look before her big premier on Fox TV’s “Glee”.  Botox along with invasive surgeries, such as blepharoplasty and rhinoplasties, are becoming more popular among Asian Americans as well.

Enhancing Cultural Beauty.
While some are going under the knife to look “more American”, many long for curves that are associated with women of certain ethnicities. The Brazilian Butt Lift is a trending cosmetic procedure that can allow for a more curvaceous shape, while enhancing a woman’s natural silhouette.

Regardless of your reason for wanting plastic surgery, it’s important to have realistic expectations and to find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who can safely and effectively provide you with the results you are hoping for!  Call today for your complimentary consultation with Dr. Armando Soto, our Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and body-contouring expert here at Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery.

The Importance of Choosing Your Botox Injector Wisely

Along with the warmer weather, comes the desire to look our best for the onset of Summer. When shopping  around for the best deal in town on Botox injections, you may find a bargain or two that sound almost too good to be true – and this may be because they are just that…

Take a look at this recent article about a “Plastic Surgeon" who was just indicted for performing illegal Botox injections.
Unfortunately, this kind of thing is happening more and more frequently - we've even recognized this kind of activity going on in Central Florida where  some doctors licensed in Florida are practicing outside of their scope of training ( ER doctors, eye doctors, etc).
That being said, you might want to think twice about whom you choose to do your injections – you don’t want to end up with uneven eyebrows, now do you?  Or worse, how can you be sure it’s actually Botox being injected? Definitely not worth the risk just to save a few pennies…
Choosing a skilled provider is key - trust yourself with only an expert.  Here at Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery, our Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, Michelle Boone, has been beautifying patients for over 10 years! Call today to schedule your complimentary consultation with Michelle. She’ll have you looking and feeling younger than ever in no time! 407.218.4550

Dr. Soto's Take on a Recent Liposuction Survey

With Summer just around the corner, it might seem as if the many alluring ads for fat reduction are starting to scream for your attention every which way you turn. It can be quite confusing as to which methods of liposuction are actually safe and effective, and which ones are just a waste of your time and money? Orlando’s Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Armando Soto, educates us on questions to ask and what to look for when deciding which method of liposuction is best for you...

Q: Dr. Soto, there was a recent survey taken about the safety and effectiveness of the newest methods of liposuction.  According to this survey, most Board Certified Plastic Surgeons believe that newer liposuction devices are nothing more than marketing gimmicks.  Being a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon yourself, what are your opinions about this?

A: Well, I think what you are referring to is a recent survey done by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. First of all, it’s important to understand some of these societies - because not all societies that you read about are actually legitimate or require any special training to join them.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is a very legitimate society.  To become a member you not only have to be a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, you also have to prove that the vast majority of your practice is cosmetic in nature, so it actually is a very prestigious and legitimate organization.

ASAPS did a survey of their members recently discussing the technologies available for liposuction.  As we all know, over the past few years there has been a lot of new stuff coming out for liposuction and all of these machines say that they can do things that the previous machines could not.  Smart Lipo was one of the first ones, as well as Cool Lipo, Pro Lipo, Aqua Lipo.  There are so many different ways to make your fat go away it can be confusing, especially when the manufacturers and sometimes the doctors that use them make irresponsible and unprovable claims about the things that these machines can do.  The survey asks the members of ASAPS how many of us use each of these technologies and why.

The survey showed that the vast majority of plastic surgeons and members of the Aesthetic Society believed that most of these newer devices are just marketing gimmicks and don’t really show a significant benefit over the older technologies.  Using the word “older” can make it seem like it’s not as good - because we all get hungry for things that are new and exciting, but it’s important to understand that just because something is new it doesn’t make it better.  With cell phone technology and computer technology moving so fast, it gets to be normal for us to think that just because something is new, it’s better.

In medical technology, things don’t always move as fast because the anatomy of the body doesn’t change over time.  So the truth of the matter is, when the next liposuction machine comes out instead of asking is it going to make our fat go away, what we really should be asking is: "Is it going to make our fat go away better?  Is it going to be safer? Is it going to be less expensive than the other liposuction technologies that have existed for some time?"  If you let yourself get fooled into asking  “Does it make my fat go away?”, well, there’s tons of things that can make your fat go away.  Not all of them are safe - some of them can be very expensive, and it’s not necessarily going to make your fat go away in a safer or more aesthetic manner.

When you ask the really difficult questions, the questions that really matter, in other words “Is it better? Is it safer? Is it less expensive?”,  then in that case you’ll be able to come to the conclusion that traditional tumescent liposuction is best for most women.

Vaser Liposuction or other ultrasound based devices do have benefits in some patients - patients who have had previous surgery or patients who want liposuction in an area of their body where their fat is very fibrous.  But if you ask those difficult questions, there are very very few surgeons, and certainly very few legitimate, experienced surgeon members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery who actually believe that laser based devices like Smart Lipo or water based devices, like Aqua Lipo, actually show any benefit for their patients. For the most part, those devices show benefit for the surgeon.  In other words, they are going to increase my bottom line and allow me to get patients in the door and make more money.  But it’s not necessarily better for the patient, so you need to be very careful what you read and what you believe.

New Body, New Beginning

Choosing to have plastic surgery can be a very personal decision, and you should give yourself time to do your proper due diligence.

While there are many different reasons for having plastic surgery, a rising trend in the U.S. seems to be for men and women of all ages to seek enhancements right around the time of a major breakup or divorce.

Some recent studies show that women and men with the relationship blues account for roughly 30% of all plastic surgery cases performed today.

There can be no doubt that Plastic Surgery can be an effective way for patients to gain some self-confidence before jumping back into the dating pool. However, it’s important to carefully consider your motivations before going under the knife- as even the very best surgical outcomes will probably not get you a better job, husband, or salary.

And the most important thing to remember is that when you are ready, be sure you take the time to choose the best board certified plastic surgeon for you.

As deaths mount, we can only hope State Medical Boards and Legislatures limit physician practices

Many of our regular readers may remember that Michelle Boone (my nurse practitioner and one of Central Florida's foremost experts on Botox, lasers, and injectables) lost her sister a few months ago- she died having a liposuction procedure performed by a gynecologist in her home state of California.

For reasons that are not clear to me, the gynecologist was allowed to continue to practice, and within the past few weeks, another woman has died in his office as a result of a liposuction procedure.

A Seattle area clinic that employs doctors from several specialties is now being sued for the liposuction related death of a 28 year old woman- the surgery was done by a Dr. Sobrino, who went to medical school in Mexico and was trained in general surgery. To my knowledge, he did not receive ACGME (American Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited training in Plastic Surgery- meaning he did not have the benefit of the years of supervised training in liposuction that Plastic Surgeons do.

The poor safety precautions and low level of care this woman received are astounding. You can read more details here:

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/432490_liposuction.html?source=mypi

Please don't think that this could not happen here in Florida... Last week in Broward County, a previously healthy woman died shortly after having a liposuction procedure with fat grafting (a Brazilian Butt Lift) in a "rejuvenation center" staffed by physicians from multiple specialties.

Bottom Line: unless you can be guaranteed that the plastic surgeon on the staff is actually doing your surgery, you should be concerned for your safety. Many unscrupulous doctors are hiring (or attempting to hire) plastic surgeons to lend legitimacy to their endeavors- effectively pulling a "bait and switch" on unsuspecting patients. The fact that there is a plastic surgeon's name on the sign in front of the office won't save you when you are having surgery by someone else- who doesn't know what they are doing.

The examples above all share one characteristic- the patients who gave their lives were being operated on by doctors who did not complete residency training in Plastic Surgery.

It cannot be over-stated-

  1. Be sure the person who will be performing your surgery (and yes, liposuction IS surgery- no matter what machine is used) completed residency training in Plastic Surgery.
  2. Be sure the person doing your surgery is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
  3. Be sure the surgery will occur in an accredited facility and NOT the doctor's office. Acceptable accreditations would include JCAHO or AAAASF.
  4. Be sure there will be a certified anesthesia provider taking care of you during surgery. In my Orlando Plastic Surgery, skin care and hair restoration center, we always use only Board Certified Anesthesiologists.
We need the State Medical Boards and Legislatures to get involved and limit doctors to practicing within the areas for which they actually have ACGME accredited training. Please join me in this effort- call my office for information on how.
