Common Fears of Plastic Surgery

Here are some of the more common concerns associated with Plastic Surgery, and find out how you can be sure to make the right decision when it comes to your procedure.

Potential Risks.
There are potential risks and complications associated with any surgical procedure.  The risks do vary depending on what procedure you are interested in, your state of health, the facility in which it is to be performed, the anesthesia provider, and how well you follow your surgeon’s instructions.

It’s very important to do research on your plastic surgeon making certain he/she is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  If you are in hands you can trust, the chances of any serious complications are extremely small.

Botched Jobs.
No one wants to spend the money and energy on a procedure that will leave them looking less attractive than before.  Choosing a plastic surgery provider because he/she offered the lowest price, or because they had the best ad will increase your risk of ending up unhappy, or even unsafe.  Some unethical providers distract consumers from the fact that they are not Board Certified and their lack of experience by employing deceitful ads, special promotions and discounts.

Educating yourself on the potential risks associated with your surgery as well as your surgeon’s education and training is key to staying safe and achieving the outcome you want.

Don’t fall prey to a promising sales pitch, inviting marketing materials, or a bargain that you just can’t seem to pass up. What matters most is that your plastic surgeon can provide you with the best outcome while keeping your safety on the top of his priority list.

Looking “Plastic”.
Another common concern is having fake and unnatural results.  No one wants to look like the cartoon-ish Catwoman.  This is understandable, and your surgeon shouldn’t want that for you either.  As long as you have realistic expectations and you choose a highly skilled Board Certified plastic surgeon, your results should be natural and inconspicuous.  After all, the goal should be to keep those around you wondering how you manage to look so fabulous, not wondering how many procedures you’ve had.

Going Under.
The idea of being unconscious during surgery is a scary thought for some.  The American Society of Anesthesiology published some helpful statistics that might just calm your fears.  When considering all patients, regardless of health condition that undergo general anesthesia for a surgical procedure the risk of dying is .0004% (This means you have a greater risk of being struck by lightning).  This risk is even less for a healthy patient undergoing plastic surgery with a Board Certified Anesthesiologist.  It should also be noted that the vast majority of providers who will offer to do your surgery under local anesthesia (awake plastic surgery) are NOT plastic surgeons, and are doing so because they do not have permission to do such procedures in accredited facilities. Furthermore, the number of women who have died undergoing these procedures under local far exceeds the complication rate of patients having surgery by surgeons certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery, but have some questions or concerns, please call Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery for a consultation with Orlando Plastic Surgeon Dr. Armando Soto.  Dr. Soto is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and received his medical degree at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University with an extra year of fellowship training specializing in breast surgery.  You can be sure to feel safe in the hands of his hand selected Board Certified Anesthesiologists at our state of the art certified operating room. The Mommies Among Victoria Secret's Angels

Each year as the holiday season rolls in, millions of viewers anxiously await the annual showcase of sexy, skimpy lingerie - The Victoria Secret Runway Show. While many of the models are barely out of their teens, there are also several of these gorgeous ladies that are proud mommies.

Alessandra Ambrosio bounced back into shape in just 3 months after giving birth to her daughter in 2008. Mother of four, Heidi Klum was even quicker when she was back in shape in 2 short months with son Henry and an astounding 5 weeks with daughter Lou. Adriana Lima and Karolina Kurkova both had children in late 2009 and said “losing the baby weight was easy”.

Just because these hot mamas claim to have gotten their pre-baby bodies back by “working out like crazy” or by being genetically blessed, it doesn’t mean the rest of us should be held up to such a stringent standard. These gals are able to work out with a personal trainer for hours on end and have nutritionists that to ensure they are eating healthy too. But wait, let’s not forget that it is their job to look good!

While working out and eating healthy is a huge part of regaining that svelte pre-baby shape, some women just cannot lose the weight overnight. The fact is, it took nine months to make that baby and it will probably take just as long for your body to heal.

The reality for most women is that the damage done to the abdominal musculature by pregnancy (especially multiple) cannot be repaired through any amount or intensity of exercise or the strictest of diets…

But don’t give up- there is help! A board certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Armando Soto, can help you achieve your goals of a better post-baby body with a Mommy Makeover. Call today to set up a complimentary consultation at 407-218-4550.

Eating For Your Blood Type

We are living in a culture where obesity is a national health problem and instant gratification is king. It seems every time we turn around there is a new “fad diet” boasting quick and easy results. The “no carb” diet, the “cleanse” diet, the “liquid” diet. Just to name a few.

Let’s face it, we are living in a world of quick fixes and expanding waistlines. There are few people I know that aren’t up for losing a few pounds. The only downfall is that few quick and easy methods are safe. The problem arises when we compromise our long-term health for instant gratification. So..what’s an American to do?

Personally, I have always been a big fan of healthy, natural nutrition. If you eat close to nature and listen to your body, you should be able to lose weight AND live a long, healthy life. The most recent natural diet fad is called eating for your blood type. Basically, it is a way to give your body the natural foods it needs based on your individual genetic make up determined by your blood type.

Currently, blood type O is the most prevalent in the US. Type A comes in second followed by B and finally AB. There is literally a mass of reading materials related to this simple concept so I decided to simplify the important stuff. Below you will find a list I have composed of all the foods that should be avoided for ALL blood types, foods that are neutral and/or beneficial for all blood types and finally, all of the foods that are beneficial for each blood type.

Of course, individual diabetic needs will vary from person to person; so make sure you double check with your Doctor before overhauling your diet completely. Enjoy.

Put "Bacne" Behind You!

Backless dresses are in... back acne is not!  No one should have to be embarrassed to show off their shoulders and back due to unsightly blemishes or “bacne”?  I’ll admit, it’s a hard task to maintain a healthy complexion back there - it is close to impossible to even reach in the shower!  Not to worry though, if you weren’t blessed with a perfectly flawless back, there is something you can do about it!  With a few visits to our Paramedical Aesthetician, Amanda Chapman, you will be flaunting your backside in no time at all!

A simple trick to try at home:  Have a friend rub benzoyl peroxide (an active ingredient in many acne fighting treatments) on the acne prone areas on your back. Once that dries, put an acne fighting toner in a spray bottle and spritz it all over your back.  This will help prevent more acne from occurring due to sweat. (Then tell your friend you owe ‘em one!)

If you are interested in something a bit more soothing and effective, a Back Facial may be just what the doctor ordered!  Just like you clean and pamper the skin on your face to keep it looking fresh and vibrant, every so often your back may need a little love too!  A back facial will help unclog pores and clear acne - leaving your back feeling soft and smooth.

At Aesthetic Enhancements, Amanda offers a variety of treatments to target your specific skin type. Steaming and extractions rid the skin of any blemishes, while an exfoliating scrub removes dead skin cells, a moisturizing mask cures hydration, and chemical peels or microdermabrasion can be used to treat a variety of concerns as well.

Just because you can’t see your back, doesn’t mean others aren’t looking!  So call our Orlando Plastic Surgery, Skincare and Hair Restoration Center today to schedule your complimentary skincare consultation!  It’s time to feel confident with your body from head to toe!

How Much Sun Damage Do You Have?

Do you know how much sun damage you have actually accrued over the years?  It is most likely more than you think.

At our Orlando Plastic Surgery and Skincare Center we use The Reveal Imaging system to “reveal” the extent of your damage in only seconds.  This is quite helpful, because even if you see a relatively even complexion with only a few freckles or discolorations when looking in the mirror, there may be significant damage lurking below the surface that will become visible as you age.

The Reveal Imager uses RBX imaging technology and is as simple as taking your photo. The Reveal device creates a high-resolution image to examine your subsurface melanin and vascular features.

You may be asking yourself, “Why would I want to see all this damage?”  Having a skincare consultation that includes a Reveal Imaging photo allows our Paramedical Aesthetician or Nurse Practitioner to determine the appropriate treatment and products that will best correct the damaged areas. For example, when only minimal damage is visible to the naked eye I might only recommend a home care regimen including a Retin-A type product and monthly chemical peels to reverse and minimize the signs of aging.

However, if the Reveal shows that your damage below the surface is extensive, though not yet visible, we may want to consider more intensive treatments such as a series of VI Peels or MiXto laser resurfacing.  What the Reveal Imager shows will provide us with the knowledge to determine how to most effectively and efficiently treat your skin.

Take a look at the video below and see how Reveal is used to document the progress of skin care treatments, providing clients with an extra level of assurance that their skin conditions are in fact improving.

Florida Board of Medicine Begins to Crack Down on Poorly Trained Physicians Performing Plastic Surgery

I was very happy when The Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons brought this piece in the St. Petersburg Times to my attention. I hope it truly represents only the beginning of the appropriate and intensive investigation into these activities needed now in Florida....

If you think you or someone you know has been injured during cosmetic surgery done by someone with inadequate training, please call my office for advice on restoring your appearance and health, and on contacting the appropriate authorities.

The Holidays are Here- What do I get Her/Him???

With The Holidays upon us, I thought it would be nice to review some of my favorite things to give and/or receive...

I should say that some are favorites because they are wonderfully effective at producing visible improvement in your appearance, some because they make your skin feel beautiful, and some just because they make me smile- and we could all use a few more reasons to smile, right?

In no particular order, here are some of my favorite things...

Origins makes a fantastic activated charcoal mask- this is great for men and women, although I would avoid this product if your skin tends to be dry already. While it may seem a bit like saying, "Here honey, your skin looks a bit dirty- this'll clean it up", the healthy, smooth, glowing look she achieves will quickly get you out of the doghouse. Available through Origins direct online, or at finer department stores.

Not sure what kind of skin she has or what she might prefer? New Beauty Magazine's Test Tube Subscription is a great way to cover all the bases. This has got to be one of my very favorite gifts to give women who love feeling pretty, looking their best, and sampling the latest and greatest products in the beauty industry (I think that describes most women, by the way). In this wonderful program, you register your desired recipient (here: http://testtube.newbeauty.com), and 4 times a year they receive a large tube full of the latest goodies being featured in the most recent issue of New Beauty- The World's Most Innovative Beauty Magazine. If you really wanna go all out- get her the Test Tube and Magazine subscription!

By now, I'm sure everyone has heard about Latisse- Allergan's new product for increasing the length and thickness of your eyelashes. This stuff is amazing! Many of my patients are making jokes about how they've had to limit how much they use to keep from having their eyelashes brushing against the back of their sunglass lenses as they drive! The only problem with giving this as a gift is that it IS a prescription medication, and does have side effects- so you would need to actually give them a consultation for Latisse, and as long as they are a candidate, they will get their prescription and product. Available through your Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist.

SkinMedica makes 2 of my favorite products for the all types of skin. Both contain Nouri-cel MD, the active ingredient that SkinMedica says:

Helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Helps to improve the appearance of age spots and dyspigmentation
Reduces roughness and firms skin texture
Improves skin texture and elasticity, and may help to reduce photodamage

In addition to Nouri-cel MD, SkinMedica's Essential Serum contains APS Corrective Complex, a "potent mixture of antioxidants, peptides, and other ingredients" that "work synergistically to transform and regenerate your skin for a more youthful appearance".  I have personally been using Essential Serum for about 8 months now, and can tell you that I love how my skin looks and feels. The smooth glow is amazing, and I receive many compliments on my skin... SkinMedica products are available at Dermatologist and Plastic Surgeon's offices..

Every woman (and in my opinion, every gentleman) should own a Clarisonic skin care brush. These amazing little pieces of technology use sonic energy (just like the Sonicare toothbrush) to throughly cleanse your skin of dead skin cells, residual makeup, and other impurities, so that the healthy, younger looking skin cells are always brought to the surface. A nice benefit of this daily sonic treatment is that because your preferred skin care products no longer have to penetrate this layer of dead skin cells and debris (that normal washing doesn't remove), you will actually need to use less of these products than before to get the same benefit- saving you money over time. I love using my own Clarisonic each morning before I shave (they make a cool gray colored one for gents)- the razor slides along my skin like a leather-soled shoe on ice!  There are several models of Clarisonic available- and most are available at Sephora or online... I like the PRO model, because it has multiple speeds, although it does cost a bit more and can only be purchased through Physicians offices.

New for this year is the Clarisonic Mia- a handy travel sized brush that's much easier to pack when space is at a premium.

For the Gentlemen in your life, I love Zirh skin care- they make a full line of products specially formulated for the needs of men's skin. I particularly like their shaving cream and toner (called Refresh).

Finally (and with a wink to anyone who might be buying a gift for me!), I love Paul Smith accessories. His wonderfully elegant cufflinks, neckties, and cases always perfectly balance masculine fashion and his fine British wit.

So there you have it- my favorite things 2009- I may add a few things here and there as I think of them, so check back often.

Have any favorite things you wish someone would think to gift you? Send me an email!
