Dreaming of Darling Dimples?

Sure, Shirley Temple was adorable with her dimples, but would you go under the knife for a pair of newly dimpled cheeks?  Dimpleplasty is a new cosmetic procedure plastic surgeons invented to satisfy the growing popularity of those requesting dimples like actress Jen Garner and Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr.

Dimpleplasty is a one-time, simple procedure that will allow you to have the dimples you’ve been dreaming of.  The procedure involves a tiny incision inside of the cheek to create a small indention.  The doctor uses a dissolvable suture to pull the underside of your cheek to a deeper layer of the skin to create the dimple.   After the suture dissolves, the scar tissue is supposed to hold the dimple permanently in place.

This is a relatively new technique and it is too soon for any long-term studies to prove it’s effectiveness or results.  Over time, the appearance of these man-made dimples may disappear or change as the face looses elasticity and begins to droop.

It is important to be cautious and do your research when dabbling in new cosmetic surgeries. You’ll want to be sure to put yourself in the good hands of a Board Certified Clastic Surgeon.

Though we do not currently offer “dimpleplasty” at Aesthetic Enhancements, we do offer a variety of other procedures that will be sure to keep you smiling!  Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Armando Soto, performs an array of cosmetic procedures from the Mommy Makeover to a Brazilian Butt Lift that will have you looking and feeling your best!

The Benefits of Masking

How would you like to achieve that flawless, radiant glow we always seem to see on the faces of models and celebrities? Just by adding an extra 15 minutes once a week to your beauty regime, you can repair and revive your skin’s overall appearance dramatically.

Part of our secret to providing a beneficial facial here at our Orlando, Florida Plastic Surgery and Skincare Center is to incorporate a specialty mask with your treatment.

Masking can provide great benefits for any skin type. If you are concerned about oil/acne control, hydration, fine lines & wrinkles or stressed, irritated skin – combining a weekly mask with your customized skin care regime can help clear up these concerns.

OILY/ACNE PRONE SKIN TYPES
Look for a detoxifying, clay-based masks containing ingredients such as kaolin, sulfur, camphor, salicylic acid, tee tree oil, cucumber extract or aloe.  These key ingredients can help to refine enlarged pores, prevent and heal blemishes and absorb excess oils and impurities from deep within the pores.  Some masks, especially those containing sulfur, can be a great overnight blemish blaster as well.  Simply apply the mask to the blemish as a spot treatment and leave it on overnight.  In the morning, the redness and inflammation will have decreased and the blemish will have diminished significantly.

DEHYDRATION, FINE LINES & WRINKLES
A cream or gel based mask can increase the moisture levels of your skin and help to temporarily firm and tighten your wrinkles.  Masks providing these benefits will be enriched with vitamins such as Vitamin A, C, E, pro-vitamin B5, peptides, grape seed extract or green tea extract to repair damaged skin.  For hydrated skin, be sure to look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, amino acids, honey or squalane as well.

ROSACEA & SENSITIVE SKIN TYPES
Masks infused with licorice, comfrey, lavender or chamomile extracts work wonders for calming redness and diminishing sensitivity. Azulene is also a key component when looking to comfort and soothe stressed & irritated skin.  This type of mask is usually available in a gel, cream or clay form.

In addition to these three common skin types, there are also many other masks that can address hyper-pigmentation, eye area concerns  and even full body mud masks.

Apply your favorite mask, sit back and relax for 15 minutes - even if this is the only time you have to yourself! Why not enhance your home care regimen and give your skin an effortless pick me up? By doing this once a week, you’ll soon be on your way to achieving that healthy glow that we all desire!

The Importance of a Neck Care Regime

For many women, the neck is one of the first areas to show signs of aging and is often neglected, either because women don’t know they should intervene in the aging process below the jaw line, or because they simply don’t know how.

Along with the décolleté, the neck should be cared for as carefully as your facial skin. While many product lines, such as Lancome and StriVectin, claim to improve the neck’s appearance – you should ‘t fall victim to marketing traps and believe that adding a new product to your daily skincare regime will magically erase years from your neck’s appearance.

The skin on the neck is thinner and more delicate than that of our face.  However, the same age defying and firming antioxidants used on the face can greatly benefit the neck area as well.

So, why add another jar to your counter top if you don’t have to?  By simply adding an extra dollop of your current antioxidant cream to your neck and décolleté each night, you will be well on your way to a firmer, more contoured neck line.

If you would like to consult with our Paramedical Aesthetician, Amanda Chapman to find out which anti-aging products are best for your skin type, call today to schedule your complimentary consultation.  Amanda will analyze your skin’s needs and design a well-balanced, medical grade facial regimen that will have your skin radiant in no time at all!  407.218.4550

Help Prevent Sun Damage With This Must Have Accessory!

Here at Aesthetic Enhancements we consider it our responsibility to educate patients on the risks involved with sun exposure.  Though you may think a nice tan provides a youthful image…the reality is quite the contrary.  In a few years, when you start to notice the consequences of sun worshipping, you will be wishing you could go back in time to lather more SPF on your face!

Sunspots, wrinkles, and premature aging are all signs of sun damage.  Unfortunately, it’s only after the harmful exposure that these signs appear.  Now, thanks to a simple wristband, you can be warned when it counts! UVSunSense is an ultraviolet-monitoring, sun-sensitive bracelet that changes color when it senses too much sun exposure.

Before heading outdoors, apply sunscreen to yourself and the wristband.  The bracelet’s photo chromatic dye allows it to change colors depending on the length of time spent basking in UV rays.  The waterproof band starts off orange and turns to a purple shade upon exposure to sunlight.  If it changes shade to a dark brown, you should reapply your SPF.  If it returns to light orange, it’s time for you to stop whatever you are doing and head inside!  For just ten dollars a pack, this is quite a clever investment!

For some of us, we are just a few sunspots too late for the wristband to completely save our complexion. However, it is never too late to start taking better care of your skin and preventing further signs of sun damage from appearing. If you are regretting the time spent in the sun and so is your face, Laser Skin Resurfacing can help diminish the signs of aging!

Here at Aesthetic Enhancements we offer the MiXto Fractionated Laser and the IPL Photofacial which both can help treat sun damage and rejuvenate the skin for a younger looking complexion!  Call our Orlando, Florida Plastic Surgery, Skin Care & Hair Restoration Center to schedule a complimentary skin consultation today!

The Benefits of a Salicylic Peel

Do you only dream of having skin as clear as the faces that grace the cover of today’s beauty magazines? Most of us long for porcelain skin that others envy -  so we’ve asked our Paramedical Aesthetician, Amanda Chapman, for the scoop on achieving a radiant, blemish-free complexion…

According to Amanda, there are many effective treatments for treating acne, but one of the most effective solutions is a chemical peel.  Choosing the right peel for your skin type can be a little confusing, so it is always best to consult with a Paramedical Aesthetician to analyze your skin’s condition and prescribe the right peel for your specific skin type.

A Salicylic Peel is an excellent treatment to help clear up acne, rejuvenate the skin’s appearance and provide an overall healthy glow.  Salicylic is a Beta Hydroxy Acid that is synthetically made from willow tree bark.  Much like the more well known Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Glycolic- Salicylic Peels work by removing dead skin cells and allowing new, healthy cells to rise to the surface.

If oily skin has always been a concern for you, a Salicylic Peel may be just the solution you are looking for. Salicylic is lipid soluble – meaning that it tends to interact best with other lipophilic substances like the oil and sebum in our skin. With a series of treatments,  excess sebum is cleared from the pores, and blackheads, whiteheads & acne lesions are improved - leaving your skin radiant and blemish free!

At Aesthetic Enhancements, we offer a full spectrum skin care services to treat every skin type. Amanda’s expertise coupled with our medical grade skin care products will have your skin looking flawless in no time! Call our Orlando, Florida Plastic Surgery, Skincare and Hair Restoration Center today to see how we can help you achieve the complexion you’ve always wanted. 407.218.4550.

Letting it All Grow Out For Fall!

Getting a monthly hair dye can be a pricey chore, but thanks to celeb’s new trend, roots are in!  Who would have thought that having dark roots and lighter sun kissed ends would ever be a sought after style?  This new hairdo is a dream come true for the low maintenance girl and is easy on the pocketbook!  Check out the stars making a statement with their new ombre do...

The Right Way To Root

Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lauren Conrad are just a few examples of blonde bombshells who have given their longer roots a chance!  Growing your roots out more than a few inches will make your worn out locks look more like a new hairstyle, rather than a result of laziness (or lack of cash)!  Plus, spreading out your color treatments will be less damaging to your stresses.

Blondes Don’t Have All The Fun!
These three starlets prove this look isn’t just for blondes!  Brunettes can rock their roots as well adding a nice contrast with the darker and lighter shades of brown.  Ashlee’s style gives her an edgier, rocker image.  If this isn’t the statement you’d like to make, you could try a softer, sweeter look like Jessica Biel or Rachel Bilson!

So maybe you should think twice before scheduling your next hair appointment... or perhaps this is a style stunt that only the rich & famous can pull off!

Nail Trends To Fall For This Season

As the weather starts to get a bit cooler and turn to fall, we are quick to put away the whites and bright colors in our closets and switch up our look to include rich browns, spicy corals and earth tones. It is also time to shake up our accessories and opt for some of the new fall nail trends.

Matte Nail Polish –This is a trend that has been seen last fall, but is not going anywhere…and is definitely not for the timid! OPI has a new line of Matte Nail polish in 6 sophisticated shades that are sure to make a bold statement. If you are not ready to make the full jump into a matte finish, try Orly Matte Top Coat to turn your glossy polish into a flatter version that resembles a middle ground between the regular polish and the matte.

Ombre Effect – Also known as the gradient effect - a funky manicure that can be rocked in two different ways. This first look involves painting each finger a different color to create a bold effect. The second is a little more subtle, and involves having two colors blend together, lengthening your nails giving the impression of a two tone finish.   Lauren Conrad has been spotted recently with daring red nails that fade into a pretty pink.

Mood Polish – As children, we have to admit that we all loved mood rings… Now we have a fun, grownup version for our nails. In the Mood polish changes colors as your body temp fluctuates. From pretty peach in the morning as you sip your warm latte to a fiery coral in the afternoon when the day seems to be winding down, these colors will keep changing as your mood sees fit!

Reverse French Manicure – also known as a “half-moon manicure” gets its name from the difference in the color in the “moon” of the nail bed and the rest of the nail. This glamorous look became popular in the 1930’s.  Metallic gold / matte navy has been very popular on the runway.    Leighton Meister, Rihanna, Megan Fox, and Ciara  are all huge fans of the trend.

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your “fashionista box” and dabble in these new Fall trends. Why not mix things up with a reversed mani using a sexy matte navy tip? Or an ombre flare using color changing polish? Any of these spicy trends are sure to heat up your fall wardrobe!

Plump Up Those Skimpy Eyebrows!

Eyebrows, like fashion trends, have their ups and downs. Think back to the 80’s with Madonna and Brooke Shields and their thick eyebrows, then the pencil thin brows of the 90’s and now there seems to be a return to fuller, thicker eyebrows! This trend was seen all over the runways at the Fall 2010 shows of Prada, Balenciaga, and Narciso Rodriguez. Jennifer Connelly, Sienna Miller and Camilla Belle are all celebs embracing bold brows.

Through years of waxing, some women can actually cause permanent hair loss of the eyebrows. Certain medical conditions can also cause hair loss such as hypothyroidism where one of the symptoms is missing the outer 1/3 of your eyebrows! Whether you suffer from being a bit overzealous with the tweezers or over time have simply lost the lush, fuller brows that you used to have there are options for you!

Here at our Orlando Plastic Surgery, Skin Care and Hair Restoration Center, our highly trained medical staff utilizes the Neograft system to restore thinning brows. We can safely, effectively and strategically transfer one follicular unit at a time to achieve fuller, natural looking eyebrows! Unlike traditional hair transplant methods, the NeoGraft procedure is minimally invasive - without scarring and down time. If you are tired of drawing on your brows, call us today for a complimentary consultation! You too can have a glamorous set of brows that even celebrities would pine after in just a matter of a few hours!

The Risks of Artificial Rays

What you should know about your un-healthy glow!

As the summer slowly fades away, so will your beautiful tan.  Many ladies hop into tanning beds to keep a healthy looking glow throughout each season.  Unfortunately, what appears to be a healthy glow is extremely damaging to your skin!

Sharon Miller, a FDA scientist and an expert on UV radiation says, “A tan is the skin’s reaction to exposure to UV rays.  Recognizing exposure to the rays as an ‘insult’, the skin acts in self-defense by producing more melanin, a pigment that darkens the skin.  Over time this damage will lead to prematurely aged skin and, in some cases, skin cancer.”

There are two different types of ultraviolet rays to watch out for!  UV-A Rays penetrate and damage the deeper layers of the skin, while UV-B rays penetrate the top layer of your skin causing sunburns.   Both of these harmful rays are emitted in tanning bed sunlamps.

Excessive exposure to these UV rays increases the risk of developing skin cancer.  Even the deadliest of them all, Melanoma, has been linked to sunburns caused by indoor tanning.  The IARC (International Agency of Cancer Research) previously categorized tanning beds as “probably carcinogenic to humans”, but in 2009 after further research they were moved to the highest risk category: “carcinogenic to humans”.

The IARC also believes the risk of melanoma increases by 75% when tanning bed usage starts before the age of 35 and it is the 2nd most common cancer found in women is their 20‘s!

Tanning not only increases your chances to develop skin cancer, it also causes premature aging.  Your skin will lose elasticity causing wrinkles at a younger age. Because these side effects aren’t noticeable until years after the exposure, it is difficult for young women to realize the severe consequences of tanning...until it is too late.

Though it is in your very best interest to avoid artificial UV rays all together, if you choose to continue your normal tanning regiment here’s a few very important things you should remember:
Wear your goggles.  If you forget them, ask for Winkies! Failure to do so can lead to short or long-term eye injuries.
Don’t over do it.  A sunburn takes up to 48 hours to develop; you may not realize you are burnt to a crisp until it’s too late!
Always be sure to follow the manufacturers recommended exposure time for your skin type to avoid burning.

To keep a truly “healthy” glow throughout the year, check out our blog entry below on what we believe to be the best of best in sunless tanners.  Utilizing a good self-tanner will give you the look of a beautiful tan while decreasing your risk of skin cancer. Who wouldn’t want to maintain youthful looking skin while flaunting a golden goddess glow!

A Search For the Perfect Golden Glow - One Bottle at a Time!

Here at Aesthetic Enhancements, we constantly try to remind our patients that one of the “secrets” to aging gracefully involves staying OUT of the sun. That poses a bit of a dilemma for those of us that still enjoy the sun-kissed look - but not the wrinkles that are sure to follow!

In order to recommend safe options to achieve that “post vacation glow” to our patients and followers, our staff conducted our very own self tanner experiment. Each of our staff members tried 3 different tanning products and rated each one in 6 different categories: Scent, Evenness, Ease of Use, Streakiness and Color. Here is what we found:

Top 5 Self-Tanners:

#5 - Bella Bronze.
This tanner was featured as a top pick in New Beauty Magazine, so we thought we’d give it a try. It left a nice, subtle glow – we just couldn’t get pass the slight streaks it left behind. This would definitely not be a good choice prior to a date, as one reviewer compared the smell to that of a can of tuna!

Cost: $27

#4 - Clarins Gelee.
With one of the highest ratings for shade of color, this popular, high-end tanner will have you looking like a bronze goddess. Even though it may take a few applications to reach the desired shade, we found this product easy to use with minimal streaks.  Sound too good to be true? It is…Our only warning is to beware of that lingering “self-tanner aroma” that just might make your lunch come up!

Cost: $34

#3 - Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess.
This tanner lends a nice subtle and even glow, without streaks and a smooth application. This product definitely has nice overall effect but leaves a slight aroma post application. We tanner was voted “most likely recommend it to a girlfriend”…especially one that lives far, far away!

Cost: $36

#2 – Jergens Natural Glow Express.
If you are looking for almost instantaneous color, try this! Stealing second place by delivering rapid results in as little as two applications, with minor streaking - this product is definitely a steal (and won’t break the bank)! Fair skinned girls beware though, this is best for those of us that aren’t so pasty (unless you are going for a striped tiger kind of look!).

Cost: $8

Which one was is #1 in our books? The best overall self-tanner was Neutrogena Micro Mist Spray, as it topped the charts due to the easy application process, even golden tan, barely-there scent and most importantly – No streaks!! You’ll have that ”Sunkissed - I was just found on a deserted, exotic island” kind of look after just a few sprays!

Cost: $9

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the most expensive self-tanners will deliver optimal results…As you can see, our experiment included products ranging from $7-$85. Amazingly enough, one of the lower priced self-tanners took first place!

TANNERS TO STEAR CLEAR OF:

There were a also few self-tanners that were part of our small experiment, but didn’t make the cut on our list of favorites, for more than one reason…

The Cellex-C tanner had the most favorable scent, but lowest score overall. For the money, you are probably better off eating a bag of carrots every day for that same tinge of color.

Cost: $85

L’Occitane delivered a pretty shimmer after a few applications. This tanner is very quick drying, but it does take a bit of patience to see the results. You could probably grow a rock garden in the time it would take you to see the results of this tanner!

Cost: $36

L’Oreal’s mist was a hit for its easy application, but did not deliver a very even OR streak-free tan. We recommend making sure you get the shade that best suits your skin tone. A fair person WILL end up looking like one of the Jackson 5 use a shade that is too dark!

Cost: $7
