How To Eliminate Loose Skin After Extreme Weight Loss

Although obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States, many are doing their best to loose the excess body weight and maintain a healthier lifestyle.  Unfortunately, this is not an easy undertaking requiring time and persistence – and the development of lots of excess skin as a reward for your hard work losing the weight can be very discouraging…

During weight gain, the skin expands to accommodate the excess fat- causing it to lose elasticity (it’s “stretchiness”).  Replacing body mass with loose and flabby skin does very little to boost self-esteem and enhance body image.

Don’t be discouraged- there are solutions to tighten and even prevent sagging skin as you drop the pounds.  When trying to achieve extreme weight loss it’s best to take things slowly.  You shouldn’t fix your old unhealthy habits by developing new unhealthy ones - plus, it’s very hard to keep the weight off when it occurred through overly aggressive dieting and exercising that cannot be maintained over the long term.

So count calories, but don’t limit yourself to an extremely restrictive diet.  Exercising regularly will also help tighten and tone problem areas as you lose the weight, but stick with a regimen that you can realistically follow for years, not months.

For those who have been struggling with weight for a long period of time, the skin and underlying tissue will not naturally return to it’s original state.  It may be necessary to undergo surgical procedures to remove the hanging skin.

With over 234,000 procedures performed in the U.S. last year, body lifts and tummy tucks are common surgeries that will improve the quality of skin and provide smooth natural contours.

Board Certified Orlando Plastic Surgeon Dr. Armando Soto offers many different procedures to tighten the skin and remove excess tissue in different areas of the body, including: abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), mastopexy (breast lift), lower body lift, thigh lifts, and brachioplasty (arm lift)

The Mommy Makeover Demystified

Mommy makeover surgery is among the more popular procedures in my practice, and is also one of those with the highest rates of patient satisfaction. I find it fulfilling to help mothers achieve the peaceful sense of confidence that comes from being happy once again with their appearance- but have noticed that the term is a bit confusing to some. Here is my best attempt to explain.

The term Mommy Makeover refers to a combination of procedures designed to return a woman's body to the pre-pregnancy condition (or better!), by addressing the changes that pregnancy and childbirth bring to (most often) the breasts and abdomen.

Mommy makeover, therefore, can include breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift with augmentation, and a tummy tuck, modified tummy tuck, mini-tummy tuck, or liposuction. Many possible combinations are possible, and the exact nature of the procedure will depend on the individual woman's goals for her appearance, the changes that pregnancy and childbirth produced in her body, her overall state of health, and her preferred experience. The most common combination is breast augmentation with a tummy tuck.

So why do we combine the procedures so often that the combination has taken on this cute nickname? There are several good reasons that combining the procedures when possible is in your best interests...

By combining the procedures, you will experience one recovery period rather than two, meaning less time away from family and/or work responsibilities, as well as your preferred activities. You will usually also save a fair bit of money, as combining them shortens the overall length of surgery, and by improving the efficiency of your surgeon and the OR team, your costs are also significantly reduced (in most practices). Finally, it's my opinion that you will also (in most cases) enjoy a better outcome, as the contours of both areas of the body can be fine tuned to their greatest aesthetic harmony and proportion.

The best way to understand what a mommy makeover could do for you is to visit with a surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and discuss your goals with them. At Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery our consultations are complimentary, and we believe that the combination of our team's education, training, integrity, and the outcomes we provide our patients make us a great choice for your aesthetic care. Come visit us- we'll look forward to meeting you!
