I won't say this is a good reason to get silicone breast implants...

Boa constrictor meets its match, and it's silicone

Authorities say no autopsy is planned for a boa constrictor that reportedly died of silicone poisoning after biting a model on the breast last month during a photo shoot.

Israeli model Orit Fox, 28, had traveled to Tel Aviv for the photo shoot with the snake for Spanish television network Telecino, the London Daily Mail reported in its March 15 online edition.

Minutes into the shoot - shortly after Fox went nose-to-nose with the snake for a kiss - the reptile curled over and latched onto her left breast, which had been augmented by a silicone implant. An assistant rushed to detach the snake from Fox's breast, and the model was taken to a nearby hospital.
Fox received a tetanus shot, while the snake died, the Daily Mail reports.

Positively Pink - Show You Care, Be Aware!

Sadly, cancer seems to touch all of us in some way.  That is why every October mothers, aunts, daughters and survivors everywhere come together to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.  Statistics show that 1out of 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer throughout the course of her lifetime.

However, as a result of the breast cancer research performed each year, there have been more than 2.5 million brave and inspiring breast cancer survivors in the U.S. this year alone.

Unlucky for us ladies (though men can develop it too), the most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender & age.  Although we can’t control the aging process, we can take steps to avoid cancer or at least find it during its early stages.

Most doctors feel that early detection tests have saved the lives of thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, but the number of survivors could be even higher if more took advantage of these simple screenings.  Though what we can do to avoid breast cancer may be limited, the amazing number of survivors shows the great strides that have been made in early detection and treatment.

Steps To Take:
Know Your Risk.   Learn about your family’s health history.  Understand your risk by talking to your Doctor.

Check Yourself.  You should begin breast self-exams (BSE) in your early 20’s to be familiar with the look and feel of your breasts.  This way if there ever is a subtle change in your breasts you will know.  If you do note any lumps, tenderness or discharge from your breasts, be sure to bring it to your doctor’s attention ASAP.

Get Screened.  Women in their 20’s & 30’s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) by a health professional, at least once every 3 years.  Women age 40 and older should have a CBE once a year, along with a yearly mammogram (although some controversy exists about the best mammography schedule- talk to your gynecologist about your risk and appropriate screening).

Lower Your Estrogen Levels.  Living a healthy lifestyle by exercising, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting your alcohol intake can help to reduce your odds of developing breast cancer by lowering your levels of estrogen.

The effects of battling breast cancer can sometimes leave women feeling as if they have lost a part of their femininity.  It is comforting to know that despite the emotional distress, there are aesthetic options available through breast reconstructive surgery to help you look and feel your best again.

When considering breast surgery, it is important to consult with an expert who can deliver the safety and outcome you deserve. Revision of your Breast Implant Surgery can bring Positive Change

Because I completed a fellowship (an additional year of training after core residency training, in some sub-specialty) in advanced breast surgery techniques, I see between 10 and 20 pairs of breasts a day. In the course of this experience, I have learned a great deal from my patients...

I have learned that what is a pleasing and fulfilling surgical outcome to one woman may not be to another. Indeed, often in the same day I will meet a patient who wants her D cup breasts reduced to B's, and 60 minutes later a woman who wants to trade her B's for D's.

It's not for me to judge what is best for any individual- provided their goals are safe and reasonable.

I have learned that (for the most part) men and women have much different views on what constitutes a "natural looking" breast (no surprise there).

I have learned that when most women feel beautiful they are more engaged, self-confident, and outwardly beautiful to their friends, colleagues and the casual observer. I also believe (and have been told by patients) they are more energetic and ultimately successful, although this would be impossible to measure.

I have also learned that when women experience a poor outcome, they are amazing in their capacity to accept deformity. The patient in this photo had been living with this outcome for years before finally doing the research it took her to find me and have it corrected to this:

And that's why I am so passionate about educating patients to make the very best decision they can in choosing who does surgery on you. Even of you don't come to me (I say), please, please PLEASE investigate your surgeon's education, training, credentials, and OUTCOMES thoroughly and with a critical mind... If there is anything worse than not being happy with yourself, it would have to be having surgery, spending money, going through a recovery, and STILL not being happy with yourself.

It is simply not reasonable to expect all plastic surgeons to be created equally- human beings are variable in every way, medical schools vary in quality and the experiences provided, as do residency training programs.

Because so many women unfortunately make poor decisions, based on all of the wrong criteria (like price) there are an amazing number of really funny looking breasts out there. And here's the thing- after having the surgery, there's an Emperor's New Clothes kind of phenomenon that often occurs, where the patient expresses concern over their outcome to their surgeon and he/she tells them that their concern is unfounded and the outcome is the best that could have been achieved.

To be fair, this is sometimes the case. But often it is not, and the only reason the breasts could not be more attractive in the opinion of the patient's surgeon is because he/she simply does not have the understanding necessary to create the positive change the patient wants. And so most of these women, not wanting to be complainers, or just because they don't know better, tolerate the problems with their breast contour- sometimes for many years, before finding someone like me and pursuing the change they wanted in the first place.

Revision of less than ideal breast implant outcomes is very common in my practice, and I am very proud of the appearance we are able to achieve for our patients (many of whom as I say, have had problematic experiences in plastic surgery before coming), but even more of the positive effect this then has on their sense of happiness and well-being.

I guess the take home message would be that you should minimize your risks of feeling dissatisfied with your surgery by making smart decisions in the first place, but if you do end up with breasts you are not happy with- know that improvement or correction is possible.

The Mommy Makeover Demystified

Mommy makeover surgery is among the more popular procedures in my practice, and is also one of those with the highest rates of patient satisfaction. I find it fulfilling to help mothers achieve the peaceful sense of confidence that comes from being happy once again with their appearance- but have noticed that the term is a bit confusing to some. Here is my best attempt to explain.

The term Mommy Makeover refers to a combination of procedures designed to return a woman's body to the pre-pregnancy condition (or better!), by addressing the changes that pregnancy and childbirth bring to (most often) the breasts and abdomen.

Mommy makeover, therefore, can include breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift with augmentation, and a tummy tuck, modified tummy tuck, mini-tummy tuck, or liposuction. Many possible combinations are possible, and the exact nature of the procedure will depend on the individual woman's goals for her appearance, the changes that pregnancy and childbirth produced in her body, her overall state of health, and her preferred experience. The most common combination is breast augmentation with a tummy tuck.

So why do we combine the procedures so often that the combination has taken on this cute nickname? There are several good reasons that combining the procedures when possible is in your best interests...

By combining the procedures, you will experience one recovery period rather than two, meaning less time away from family and/or work responsibilities, as well as your preferred activities. You will usually also save a fair bit of money, as combining them shortens the overall length of surgery, and by improving the efficiency of your surgeon and the OR team, your costs are also significantly reduced (in most practices). Finally, it's my opinion that you will also (in most cases) enjoy a better outcome, as the contours of both areas of the body can be fine tuned to their greatest aesthetic harmony and proportion.

The best way to understand what a mommy makeover could do for you is to visit with a surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and discuss your goals with them. At Aesthetic Enhancements Plastic Surgery our consultations are complimentary, and we believe that the combination of our team's education, training, integrity, and the outcomes we provide our patients make us a great choice for your aesthetic care. Come visit us- we'll look forward to meeting you!

Achieving the Beautiful Breasts You Desire!

One of the things I find most interesting is the amount of misinformation the average patient must sift through when researching breast augmentation surgery. In particular, I think that many patients become overwhelmed with implant choices and the abundance of information about these options available on the Web...

This is complicated once they contact a surgeon or two for information about the implants, and which is most likely to give them the result they desire. Somewhere along the way, opinions expressed by a surgeon are perceived as fact by a prospective patient (because of the surgeon's reputation or the apparent strength of his/her opinion), who then becomes more confused when she hears a differing opinion.

This leads to ridiculously technical questions being posted on sites like RealSelf and others, such as:

"I am 5'5", 125 lbs, my measurements are 34, 22, 36. I have had 3 babies, all by C-section, and I breast fed two of them. My breasts sag a little, but not as much as some women I have seen. I want to have a full C-cup breast. Should I get 325 cc Allergan 410 style implants, or Mentor 350 cc Moderate profile implants. Projection is more important to me than a natural shape..."

Every time I get one of these over-thought questions, I always think the same thing... ???????

Let's take a big step back from the trees here and take a look at the forrest in front of us, shall we?

Fundamentally, the reason any woman seeks breast augmentation is because she wants to achieve a certain appearance, right? Let's repeat that- to achieve a certain appearance. NOT a certain bra size, or a certain implant volume, or even a certain implant type. When  you first started to think you might want an augmentation, you didn't think, "I would like it if I could have 350cc implants"... You probably thought, "I would love to look like that (after admiring another woman's breasts)..."

So if we can agree that what you are really after is an appearance you would be happier with, (as I always tell my patients) let's make the desired appearance the focus of our communications... Let us both ignore bra sizes (which are not standardized and the choice of which is very arbitrary) and implant types/sizes (for now)... Let's first understand what you want to look like. I think you would agree that if we are able to make you look the way you wanted to look, the letter on your bra and the number on your implant is less important, right? Help me understand what you want to look like, and I can give you a very accurate recommendation of options for achieving that appearance- provided a careful physical examination has also occurred.

Why is the exam so critical? After all, can't we just put small implants in women who want small breasts and larger implants into those who want larger ones?

The exam is critical, because for any one particular woman, there are only a few good choices of implants available, regardless of her goals, and these options are arrived at by taking careful stock of her breast tissue, skin, and frame. In other words, your anatomy will, to a large extent, help us understand the implant options that would make you look the best. This is the "One Right Result" concept. The taking of these measurements is so important, I do it myself every time, and based on these measurements and my patient's goals, then make recommendations regarding the implant options available to her (as these options would be different for different women).

While (as with any aesthetic procedure) no guarantee of outcome can be given, you are much more likely to achieve your desired outcome if you focus on communicating your desired appearance successfully with a skilled and experienced, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon than by over-researching the implants and micro-managing the details of the surgery. In fact, I can think of no better way for you to increase the odds of you ending up dissatisfied.

So don't over-think it... Think carefully about the appearance you want, communicate it carefully to your surgeon (using photos if possible), and make sure that the implant choice arrived at by the two of you together is based on both your anatomy and your goal. You'll be happier and the process will be less stressful!
