Introducing New Links to Help You Know and Understand Truth in Aesthetic Surgery

Because there is so much fraud and outright quackery in the provision of aesthetic care in Florida, one of my overriding goals for this blog has always been to help the average patient become better educated and empowered to make decisions that are in his/her best interests.

I am happy to have added links to The Plastic Surgery Channel and to Coolsculpting.com

I hope anyone and everyone interested in aesthetic medicine and surgery will take advantage of these resources-

Remember- it doesn't matter how good the doctor offering you a treatment promises you're going to look if you aren't safe!

Trust your safety and happiness only to an experienced, ethical, surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

What we've learned about Coolsculpting by Zeltiq so far

Having been the first practice in Central Florida to offer Coolsculpting by Zeltiq, and now having treated many patients with this exciting procedure, I would like to share what we've learned about the procedure and its benefits with you... As always, you are welcome to email me questions, or even better- come on in to our Orlando Plastic Surgery, Skin Care, and Hair Restoration Center for a complimentary consultation.

  • First of all, it is important to realize Coolsculpting will not replace liposuction.
    • While it is clear and undeniable that the Coolsculpting procedure is effective in the permanent reduction of fat, the reduction is more moderate than can be achieved through a well-done liposuction or tummy tuck procedure (meaning one done by a surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery who knows what they're doing).
    • The outcome really does take a few weeks (6-7 weeks) to develop. Most patients are underwhelmed by the improvement until this much time passes- then they're happy!
  • Because each application of the device kills 20-25% of the fat cells in the area, improvement is real, but in order to achieve your desired improvement (which may require reduction of more than 25%), more than a single treatment may be necessary (depending on your anatomy and your goals). The more fat you have, the less reasonable it is to expect that you will achieve your goal after a single treatment.
  • There really is NO downtime. We're all tired of doctors promising us a painless procedure and no downtime, right? In almost all cases, it's simply not true, and makes me wanna vomit... But I have been very impressed with the completely smooth post-treatment experience my patients have had. Everyone has returned to their lifestyle immediately after the treatment, without need for garments, restrictions, limitations, or medication. Very cool (pun intended).
  • Achieving the best results with Coolsculpting requires a firm knowledge of anatomy and sound body contouring principles. Please see a qualified plastic surgeon for this procedure if looking your best is important.
If you have a few areas of fat that have been resistant to your healthy lifestyle, and would like to be rid of them without surgery, come see us for a consultation to see if Coolsculpting is right for you!

New Micro-sites for Your Educational and Reading Pleasure!

I believe very strongly that educated patients are happier with their outcomes and more compliant with their instructions- and so work very hard to help my patients understand ALL of their options, the pros and the cons of each.

Regular readers of this blog also know how extremely seriously I take my responsibilities to the community as a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon- I think it is very important in our current environment (what with ER doctors marketing themselves as "premier" providers of liposuction and eye doctors trying to fool you into thinking they are plastic surgeons...) to also help patients separate fact from fiction when it comes to aesthetic treatments. There is too much snake oil being sold in Central Florida...

So, having said all of that, I am very pleased to announce the launch of 2 micro-sites (small websites) to help educate our patients on some of their aesthetic options (with a few more to come!):
  1. www.CoolSculptingOrlando.com  is designed to help you understand and learn all about the Coolsculpting by Zeltiq procedure. Coolsculpting is the ONLY FDA approved, non-invasive procedure for PERMANENT fat removal. Remember- Coolsculpting by Zeltiq is the one with the Harvard based science behind it, and the one that provides for fat cell killing (not just fat cell emptying).
  2. www.OrlandoBrazilianButtLift.com  provides information about buttock enhancement using your own fatty tissue stores, allowing improvement in areas where fat is in excess, with replacement of the fat in the buttock for a rounder, more pleasing shape and projection.
Both sites will eventually allow dialogue between the community and staff here at our Orlando Plastic Surgery, Skin Care and Hair Restoration Center, and serve as a useful and convenient conduit for information exchange and maximization of preoperative and postoperative care.

As mentioned above, more sites are coming, each centered around a particular capability, procedure or technique here at Aesthetic Enhancements. I hope you'll share opinions, feedback, and suggestions with me as we develop these.

Aesthetic Enhancements Announces the Arrival of Zeltiq Coolsculpting!

I am extremely excited to announce the pending arrival of our brand new Zeltiq technology.

After proper training, (and with proper patient selection by a surgeon trained to offer safe alternatives to those who are not candidates) Zeltiq allows a reduction of 20-25% of an area's subcutaneous fat without surgery, needles, anesthesia, or downtime!

It's called crylipolysis, and the science behind it is now solid and the outcomes consistently reproducible and positive. The basics are that fat cells die when exposed to cold, and that the temperature at which the fat dies is higher than temperatures dangerous to other tissues (nerves, blood vessels, skin...). Zeltiq allows the fat to be brought to just the right temperature... causing the fat cells to die over the month or so after the procedure (by a process called programmed cell death, or apoptosis), which then leads to the absorption of the fat cells by the body- never to be replaced.

While we ARE very excited, and I DO believe in this technology, there are a few important points to make:

  1. Zeltiq will NEVER replace liposuction or other procedures. If you need liposuction or a tummy tuck, Zeltiq will NOT give the same outcome as surgery.
  2. Because the above is true, it is imperative to see a surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery for your Zeltiq treatments-- if you are not a candidate, you would want to know that alternative options are being described to you by someone well-trained to perform them on you safely.
We should have our device in place and ready for patient treatments early in July- I'll look forward to educating as many of you as possible about this exciting new option.
