Cosmetic Surgery Tops Teen’s Wish List

Instead of hoping for a graduation trip to the Bahamas or a load of cash to help jumpstart their first semester at a University, many high school students asked for something different this year for their graduation gift - plastic surgery!  Cosmetic surgery has become a growing trend on the wish lists among many high school teens.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic procedure for teenagers between the ages of 13-19 - with a total of 34,994 procedures performed just last year.  Other procedures, such as breast augmentation and liposuction, have also become increasingly popular among young women as well.  A grand total of 74,852 teenage cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2009 - not including the 134,701 that represent minimally invasive procedures.

Is cosmetic surgery the best idea for teens?  Critics say that teenage women who are obsessed and unhappy with their looks are too young and shortsighted to fully grasp the implications of physically altering their bodies.  Moreover, most teens may still be developing and may not need or desire the plastic surgery after a few more years.

Some doctors and psychologists are concerned that teens may want the operation to “fit in” or to please someone else.  In this case, the plastic surgeon may assess that plastic surgery is not right the best solution at that time.  Parents even admit to pressuring children to go under the knife to give them a competitive edge in the world.  Maturity usually comes with age, but not in all cases! The patient, whatever age, should elect to have surgery to make him/herself feel better - not for peers or parents.

Plastic surgeons ultimately make the decision whether or not to operate based on the individual’s circumstance through careful interviews aimed at the teen’s goals.  Any patient considering plastic surgery must be an appropriate candidate with realistic expectations, whether they are 18 or 50 years of age!
